Title

Senior Telephone Technician

II.

Definition

Under general supervision, is responsible for telephone equipment installation,
troubleshooting and hardware testing. Coordinates activities of equipment and line vendors
and maintains internal systems to assure that voice network components are operational.
Analyzes system requirements and develops needed software parameters as directed.
Maintains records of the equipment failures and coordinates preventive maintenance and/or
corrective programs with vendor/internal service personnel.

Examples of Duties

Installs and performs preventative and on-call maintenance on telephone equipment
including, but not limited to: telephone, telephone switches, voice mail, uninterrupted power
supplies, public address, intercom, cabling; including voice, data, T1 and fiber and other
related equipment and services. Maintains detailed records on voice communication
network, including utilization of lines and telephone company circuits, error and retry
statistics on multi-drop lines and individual stations, and other data to facilitate on-going
optimization of the voice network. Coordinates and fulfills service requests for telephone
installation, relocation, repair, and maintenance with other personnel, vendors, and
contractors where appropriate, and the user requesting the services. Analyzes telephone
needs and recommends cost-effective solutions to problems. Configures the
telecommunications network software as needed to maintain a reliable and efficient system.
Submits recommendations for configuring technology enhancements for end users
according to Technology Services recommended tools, such as type of telephones or
features.

Employment Standards

A.

Knowledge of:

Basic Data or Voice Communications Theory:

Telecommunications software;

Operation/repair/installation of voice communications test equipment;
Cable requirements and interface technology;

Electronics concepts, and theory.

B.

Ability to:

Read and draw schematic diagrams; perform skilled shop work in the
construction, maintenance and repair of telephone/dataequipment; perform research and
tests on equipment; keep records and write reports.

Analyze, diagnose and determine the causes of telephone problems;

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;

Meet with the public tactfully and courteously and establish and
maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.

C.

Education/Training/Experience

AA degree with emphasis in electronics or related field or equivalent training and
demonstrated experience in voice communications hardware and software maintenance in a
multi-user environment.

D.

Licenses/Certificates:

Valid California Driver’s License.
