II.Definition

 

Under the supervision of the Maintenance Department administration, the Central Station Operator is responsible for monitoring the intrusion alarm system as well as operating various complex computer software programs. The operator must have the ability to work well under pressure, be a good problem solver, and work unsupervised at times. This person must be able to follow established procedures, identify problems, respond to alarms, and relay accurate reports of situations to the proper administrator.

 

III.Examples of Duties

 

Uses knowledge of district operations and exercises independent judgment; monitors computer screens for unauthorized intrusion into district facilities; writes incident reports, keeps a data base of daily activity and reports data to the appropriate administrator, department, and/or police; may do filing, computer input, requisitions, and other basic maintenance office clerical work, as assigned. By the end of the training and probationary periods, the employee must have a thorough knowledge of the District facilities including the names of schools, addresses and personnel associated with each District site.

 

IV.Distinguishing Characteristics

 

The Central Station operates 24 hours; operators will generally work five (5) eight hour days per week including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Lunches and breaks may need to be taken in the Central Station area when only one person is on duty; in those instances, the employee will be paid for the lunch and/or break period. The station must be monitored at all times in the event an alarm should be signaled.

 

V.Employment Standards

 

A.Knowledge of: Clerical procedures; District organization; Correct English usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation; Operation of computer systems and equipment; Various word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet, graphics, and database programs.

 

B.Ability to: Have a thorough knowledge of the District facilities for the purpose of monitoring each site; Do clerical work involving judgment, accuracy and speed; Type from clear copy at 35 words per minute;Operate various computer software programs, including, but not limited to, word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet, graphics, and database programs; Meet physical and/or mental requirements associated with tasks outlined in this position description; Work effectively and cooperatively with others.

 

C.Education/Training/Experience: Graduation from high school.
