Computer Operator II

II.

Definition

Under general supervision, operates computer and telecommunications equipment; performs
clerical work in conjunction with operations; assigns and reviews work of other operators;
and does related work consistent with the job description.

III.

Examples of Duties

Reads, interprets, and executes work plans and schedules; interprets run documentation and
workflow languages and takes appropriate corrective action as required; assigns work to
other operators and trains new staff as required; operates computer console and peripherals
including: tapedrives, printers, card readers, disk or other magnetic media storage devices;
monitors transmissions and communication to and from remote terminal equipment;
interfaces with operations management, and systems end-users or communications vendors
in the event transmission difficulties are encountered; performs system backup to assure
District's data integrity; operates system utility programs as necessary; checks input and
output for general results; communicates status of work in progress at shift turnover.

IV.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Persons in this position may assist with the training and assigning of work to new computer
operators and are capable of working independently with only general supervision .

Employment Standards

A.

Knowledge of:

Principles of data processing, basic elements and theory of job control or
workflow language for computer systems, operations, documentation
techniques, elements of programming as it relates to operation of
equipment.

B.

Ability to:

Organize and prioritize work and use independent judgment;

Understand and perform complicated procedures and techniques;
Operate electronic data processing and telecommunications equipment;

Maintain a high level of machine utilization;

Understand and carry out oral, written and coded instructions;

Analyze data and perform arithmetic calculations with speed and
accuracy;

Diagnose problems, potential causes and recommend solutions;

Write and communicate effectively;

Effectively manage resources in an environment requiring several
simultaneous actions;

Meet the public tactfully and courteously and establish and maintain
cooperative and effective working relationships.

C.

Education/Training/Experience:

One to two years experience operating medium or large scale systems in
multiprogramming environment. Amount of experience will be
dependent upon the degree of similarity with District's equipment.

Completion of an AA degree with a major in Data Processing or
equivalent at a community college or vocational trade school or any combination of
education, experience and training which meets or exceeds the standards of
knowledge.

Licenses/Certificates:

Valid California Driver's License.
