II.Definition
Operates heavy, complex maintenance and construction equipment demanding high degrees of operating skill and performs duties in all areas of construction and maintenance work on demand.
III.Examples of Duties
Operates backhoes to dig and refill trenches or small excavations; performs incidental construction work and manual labor as necessary to repair roofs, operate jackhammer, forklift and other equipment related to trenching and asphalt patching; assists in installing sanitary, storm, and electrical lines; sets grades for digging according to plan elevations; sets forms, pours and finishes concrete sidewalks; repairs line posts and fences; sets playground equipment; repairs asphalt paving; performs welding and burning as required; works closely with carpenters, electricians and plumbers to perform work as required; installs storm and sanitary catch basins and cleans as necessary, must be able as required to operate diesel road grader and 8- to 10-ton roller in asphalt patching on special projects; operates bulldozers and compactor in the handling of fill dirt as needed; operates loaders (1 yard capacity and higher), 15-ton truck crane, 20-ton tractor and tilt trailer and grade-all.
IV.Distinguishing Characteristics
Normally operates heavy equipment but may be required to operate lighter equipment as assigned. Should have a broad range of skills below the journeyman level in carpentry, welding, roofing, plumbing, electricity and miscellaneous maintenance skills. Most work is performed independently and checked for overall results by supervisors.
V.Employment Standards
A.Knowledge of:Safety rules and practices pertaining to heavy equipment operations;Operation of heavy construction equipment used in grading, compaction, bulldozing, leveling, trenching and backfilling
B.Ability to:Operate and make minor repairs on equipment used;Read grade stakes and construction plans;Understand and carry out written and oral instructions;Prepare simple written reports
C.Education/Training/Experience: Completion of 12th grade or equivalent, five years of recent experience in the operation of heavy automotive equipment used in the construction trades (the operation of equipment in the performance of necessary repair services such as road testing, driving equipment to service areas and manipulating operating control levers does not constitute qualifying experience), and/or completion of a recognized equipment operator apprenticeship program.
D.Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a Class I State of California motor vehicle license before applying.
