Definition

Under general supervision, to supervise and participate in the work of keeping a school
plant or installation clean and orderly; and do related work consistent with the job
description.

Examples of Duties

Confers with school administrators and supervisors regarding care and cleaning programs
at the school plant; supervises work of custodians and assists, trains and instructs them in
performing their duties. Establishes and maintains written, detailed work schedules; sees
that rooms are set up for special events and needs; reports needed repair work to proper
authorities; conducts frequent inspections of the plant, including heating and ventilating
systems, to insure that standards of safety are met; makes routine boiler checks and adds
compound as instructed; sweeps, scrubs, waxes, and polishes concrete, linoleum, tile and
wood floors and vacuums rugs and carpets in school plant offices and rooms; cleans and
dusts walls, furniture, woodwork and other equipment; sweeps walks and entrances; washes
windows; changes lights; washes, scrubs, polishes metal work; empties and cleans waste
containers; assists in moving or rearranging chairs, tables, desks, furniture and other
equipment; maintains equipment used in the course of work; performs special custodial
work upon request of faculty members; may be required to assist food van driver to load
and unload van.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Positions in this class are distinguished from Custodian I by the assignment of complete
responsibility for the maintenance and cleaning of an elementary school or similar size
installation and supervision over Custodian l; or supervisory responsibility over a night
custodial crew engaged in cleaning and routine maintenance of a large school plant.

Employment Standards

A.

Knowledge of:

Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work;

Requirements for maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and
condition;
The tools and basic practices of building routine maintenance work.

Ability to:

Effectively demonstrate custodial skills to employees;

Supervise the work of others;

Use basic tools in performing minor repairs and adjustments;

Perform heavy physical labor;

Keep records and prepare reports;

Meet the public tactfully and courteously and establish and maintain
cooperative and effective working relationships;

Read and understand directions in use of chemicals and solutions,
especially those which could be dangerous to a person's health.

C.

Education/Training/Experience:

Completion of 10th grade or equivalent or any combination of education,
experience and training which meets or exceeds the standards of
knowledge, skills and abilities listed above and passage of District performance
test.

One year custodial experience.
