Equipment Mechanic

Definition

Performs skilled journeyman level mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of
mechanized equipment; and do related work consistent with the job description.

III.

Examples of Duties

Does general and major overhaul work on tractors, sweepers, loaders, mowers, cement
mixers, construction type equipment and other equipment as required; repairs and sharpens
mower cutting units; repairs mowers, air-cooled engines, magnetos, chain saws, blowers,
edgers, power vacuums, sprayers, spray pumps; repairs hydraulic jacks and rams,
generators, tillers, hammer knife units, shredder, aerifier disc, trailers and rollers; tunes up
motors, brake work, clutch, wheel bearings, electrical wiring, transmissions; fabricates metal
items as required; uses electric arc and gas welding equipment; makes emergency field
repairs; keeps records and reports; orders and keeps inventory of parts; does repairs
(including body and fender work) on automobiles, trucks, and buses (including minor
upholstery repairs); may act as a lead worker.

Employment Standards

A.

Knowledge of:

Standard practices, methods, tools and equipment of the trade;

Principles of gasoline and diesel engines;
Operation and use of electric arc and gas welding equipment;

Hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

B.

Ability to:

Meet the public tactfully and courteously and establish and maintain cooperative and
effective working relationships;

Use the tools and equipment necessary for mechanized equipment repair and
adjustment;

Locate and adjust defects in mechanized equipment;

Understand and effectively carry out oral and written instruction.

C.

Education/Training/Experience:

Equipment Mechanic

Completion of 12th grade.

Five years of experience as a journeyman in the field of repair of mechanized
equipment, or any combination of education, experience and training which meets or
exceeds the standards of knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

D.

Licenses/Certificates:

Valid California Driver's License.
