I.Title General Maintenance Worker
II.Definition
Under general supervision to perform a variety of tasks involving the general maintenance and repair of school buildings, premises and varied equipment, and to perform other duties consistent with the job description. May be required to perform minor glazing services, lock repairs, woodworking tasks, electrical, painting, heating and ventilating services and any other normal routine maintenance duties associated with operation of school district buildings and equipment that does not require the skill of a journeyman craftsman.
III.Examples of Duties
May be required to perform a variety of basic tasks to repair and maintain the buildings and equipment in a K-12 school environment. Examples of these tasks would be: replacing floor tile, replacing electrical ballasts and florescent tubes, painting out graffiti, repair fencing, patch asphalt or concrete, setting forms, installing paper towel or toilet paper dispensers, patching holes in plaster or wood walls, installing movie screens, chalkboards, tackboards, patching roofs, scraping paint, demolition, trenching, cleaning out keyways of locks, vandalism repair work, preventative maintenance on equipment, pressure washing, locker repair work, sheet metal repair, tile repair/ replacement both ceiling and ceramic bathroom tile, indoor and outdoor bleacher repair.
IV.Distinguishing Characteristics
Positions in this class are assigned a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of school buildings, premises and related equipment. While the full range of journeyman skills in a particular trade area are not required, adequate performance does require some past experience and working knowledge of building maintenance work across several crafts. Incumbents are expected to perform routine preventive and maintenance repair work in the normal course of their duties. Duties outlined above are representative of the collective duties of positions in this class; however, no one position would necessarily perform all of these duties.
V.Employment Standards
A.Knowledge of: Use of various types of hand and motorized tools or equipment; Safe work procedures and safety precautions; Arc and acetylene welding procedures; Variety of building maintenance and repair work skills and use of the necessary testing equipment and tools required to accomplish various tasks.
B.Ability to: Perform assigned job tasks without close supervision; Follow oral and written directions;Maintain cooperative relationships with other district staff and employes.
C.Education/Training/Experience: Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. A minimum of three years experience and knowledge of two or more building skills. i.e. plumbing /electrical, carpentry /welding, etc.
D.Licenses/Certificates: Possession of an appropriate California operator's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Be insurable and maintain insurability, being assessed with no more than two points in any three year period.
