II.Definition
Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in the installation, operation, adjustment, troubleshooting, and maintenance of heating, ventilating, refrigeration/cooling systems and auxiliary equipment. Performs related work as required.
III.Examples of Duties
(Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed)Checks v-belts, lubricates fan bearings, replaces air filters andpurified media on air handlers.Cleans condenser coils, checks all operational and safety controls, checks suction and discharges pressure, checks for refrigerant leaks, silver solders or silver brazes all breaks, evacuates and recharges system on airconditioning and condensing unit.Takes and records all temperatures and pressures throughout the system, purges air from the machines, checks condenser coils for fouling, measures specific gravity of solution and refrigerant, checks all operational and safety controls on chillers. Cleans firesides, checks operational and safety cut-out controls, conducts air/fuel ratio tests, conducts complete check of the burner assembly and flame safeguard on boilers. Inspects, adjusts, repairs, replaces and performs preventative maintenance of heating, cooling, air-conditioning and ventilating equipment and controls. Maintains timeclocks, thermostats, and other controls. Periodically disassembles and overhauls large centrifugal and reciprocating refrigeration compressors, absorption chillers, and related equipment. Repairs packaged A/C units, furnaces, combination units, heating units and ventilating fans. Makes repairs and adjustments to associated equipment such as,compressors, pumps, ventilating fans, burners and air conditioning control systems. Inspects, operates and repairs low pressure boiler systems and related heating equipment. Replaces sub-assembly units in small and large heating, ventilating and cooling systems. Performs major repairs on integrated building temperature control panels. Maintains and repairs water softeners. Maintains operating logs and related records. Performs water treatment on related heating and air condition equipment.
IV.Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a fully skilled journeyman level. Perform under generalsupervision, work of moderate difficulty in the installation, operation, adjustment, troubleshooting, and maintenance of heating,ventilating, refrigerating and cooling systems and auxiliary equipment.
V.Employment Standards
A.Knowledge of: Principals of heating, refrigeration, ventilating and cooling systems, methods, practices and tools used in the operation, repair and maintenance of a variety of heating, refrigeration, ventilating, and cooling systems and equipment used in large and small buildings and water treatment and testing on heating and air conditioning equipment, air distribution,operation and repair of automatic controls and thermostats, safety codes and regulations.
B.Ability to: Ability to provide lead direction. Ability to drain, evacuate, repair and recharge refrigeration and cooling systems. Ability to diagnose and correct operating trouble. Ability to read and interpret diagrams and blueprints. Ability to silver solder and silver braze. Ability to disassemble and overhaul large centrifugal and reciprocating refrigeration compressors. Ability to operate and repair automatic thermostats and controls.
C.Education/Training/Experience: Any combination of training and experience equivalent tocompletion of high school and three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilating, refrigeration and cooling systems which are common to large buildings.
D.Licenses/Certificates Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in California. Refrigerant Certification
