Occupational Therapist I

Definition

Under the direction of the Occupational Therapist II, coordinates
occupational therapy services to the special needs school population based upon the
recommendations of the individualized education program team. Maintains the
associated student records and does related work consistent with the job description.

III.

Example of Duties

Trains and assists paraprofessionals to work directly with students.
Assists the Occupational Therapist II in coordinating and monitoring
occupational therapy services and equipment. May work with the
Occupational Therapist II to design and coordinate student and staff
schedules to provide for participation in the occupational therapy
program. Coordinates program evaluations. Assists in assessing
student needs through the IEP process, including attending IEP meetings
and contributing to written IEP goals. Monitors student progress; serves
as a liaison to the public and to private agencies as appropriate. May
observe, consult with and assist others involved in the instructional
services of a special needs student.

A.

Knowledge of:

Basic first aid and CPR

Educational and developmental needs of children

Principles, methods, and objectives of occupational therapy;

Ability to:

Accurately assess developmental and educational needs;

Stay calm and perform in emergency health situations;

Implement treatment plans, goals and objectives;

Maintain confidentiality of student records and information;

Work with the public and outside agencies in a courteous and
tactful manner;

Maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.

C.

Education/Training/Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school, as well as
experience and/or training, preferably with children which meets
or exceeds the skills and abilities described above.

D.

Licenses/Certificates:

Valid California Driver’s License and the use of a reliable
automobile.

Current Red Cross First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
certificates.

Current registration with the American Occupational Therapy
Certification Board (AOTCB)
