I. Title Paraprofessional Secondary, Bilingual and/or Bilterate,Specific Language
II. Definition
Under general supervision, assist the instructional staff with language instruction and communication in specific subject matter, supervise the classroom activities of secondary school students; perform a variety of responsible clerical work; and to do related work as required.
III. Examples of Duties
Sets up work areas, assists teachers, and prepares materials for reading, mathematics, history/social studies, electives, foeign languages, physical education and English; may assist teachers in providing individual assistance to students; may explain, review, and correct workbooks and assist students with work assignments; prepares materials for classroom use, such as science, math, and related subject preparations; prepares visual aids; reads stories to students; discusses problem students with the teacher; sets up and operates audio/visual equipment, computers, and other related instructional equipment; monitors classrooms during examinations, study periods, and temporary emergency absences of teachers; grades tests and homework assignments; may administer make-up and other tests as required; may assist in preparing test items; supervises students in study periods; assists in supervising students on field trips; makes lesson plans; plans and prepares bulletin boards and other visual displays; scores and records results of the California Achievement Tests; requisitons supplies; operates instructional equipment; assists teacher by performing clerical tasks such as typing, computer related word processing, duplicating, filing, taking attendance, preparing seating charts, assembling tests, posting grades, and alphabetizing and filing materials; may make home visits with teachers.
IV. Distinguishing Characteristics
The Paraprofessional Bilingual will assist the teacher with direct instruction in both primary and secondary languages. The Bilingual designation may include oral translations of the teacher's lesson, oral directions to students, small group or individual instruction in either the primary or secondary language, oral translations at parent meetings or conferences, and similar related oral language skills or applications.
The Biliterate designation may include written translations of the teacher's lessons, worksheets, and/or instructional materials. The Biliterate
Paraprofessional may be asked to read materials in the second language, provide written translation for instruction or communication with parents, translate stories or materials for the school's newsletter, provide written correspondence to a parent regarding a student's performance, requirements or needs. It is not the intent of this job description to require the Biliterate Paraprofessional to do major works of translation for the school's newletter or for instructional booklets or handbooks. District translation services should be used for major publications.
V. Employment Standards
A. Knowledge of:
- English usage, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling;
- Second language usage, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling:
- Office supplies, computers, and instructional equipment;
- Safety and health rules.
B. Ability to:
- Perform a variety of moderately difficult clerical work;
- Follow oral and witten directions;
- Operate a typewriter, computer and other common office machines;
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, teachers, and co-workers;
- Speak, read, and/or write a second language as certified by the Bilingual and Bilterate tests;
- Administer English and/or specified language proficiency assessment, as directed;
- Relate and work with limited English Proficient students, indivdually and in small groups; under the direction of certificated personnel take appropriate initiative as needed.
C. Education/Training/Experience:
Completion of twelfth grade or equivalent and one year of clerical experience desirable, preferably in a school district and invloving extensive contact with students. (Completion of college level courses in specialized areas such as mathematics, science, foreign language, English or physcial education may be substituted for the preferred experience.Previous experience in the care and supervision of young children in a learning situation is desirable;
D. Licenses/Certificates:
Certificate of Certification for Bilingual and/or Bilterate proficiency as demonstrated on the District's standard Bilingual/Biliterate Tests.
VI. Specific Qualifications:
Passing scores on the Instructional Associate tests in reading, writing and mathematics or proof of passing scores on the CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test).
