I. Title Program Assistant II/Specialized Subject Area

 

II. Definition

 

Under the general supervision and direction of certificated staff to provide assistant to an instructional program in a specialized subject area; and to perform related work consistent with the job description.

 

III. Examples of Duties

 

Independently preview, order and assign supplies and materials for usage; document, copy and up-date instructional materials under the direction of a certificated staff member; trouble shoot when minimum repairs to teaching equipment/materials are needed; assists with the instruction of specialized vocabulary and coordinate student learning activities; maintain records of student achievement; maintain attendance records; coordinate budget information with District office personnel; duplicate and maintain files of instructional materials; assist in the management and guidance of student behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies and assertive discipline techniques; assist in implementing special events and ceremonies; participate in evaluation process; assist staff during select classroom activities; report suspected health problems to the appropriate school personnel; participate with certificated staff in the planning and evaluation of instructional activities.

 

IV. Distinguishing Characteristics

 

This position requires an in-depth knowledge/mastery of the specific subject area of biological and physical sciences as applied to the specialized school program. This position is distinguished by the employee's function as a science consultant to the teachers and department. The Program Assistant II is responsible for providing 16 hours a month of instructional assistance along with the coordination of resource materials for the program and students.

V. Employment Standards

 

A. Knowledge of:

 

  • Specialized subject area (extensive background and experience in science);
  • Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation;
  • General concepts of child growth and development and child behavior characteristics;
  • Student behavior management techniques and strategies.

 

B. Ability to:

 

  • Provide instruction and science consulting to the teacher and department;
  • Meet the public tactfully and courteously and to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships;
  • Organize and implement teacher planned activities with minimal supervision;
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
  • Work effectively with students;
  • Perform clerical work;
  • Relate to students in a warm and caring manner;

C. Education/Training/Experience

 

Completion of 12th grade or equivalent, and any combination of education , experience and training which meets or exceeds standards of knowledge, skills and abilities listed above. Written verification of experience and ability to serve in the instructional consulting capacity as identified by the science teacher, principal, and department.

 

D. Licenses/Certificates:

 

Valid California Driver's License and use of reliable automobile.

VI. Specific Qualifications

 

Passage of District clerical and appropriate specialized subject area tests. The salary calculation at Range 21 is based on the employee's previous Range and Step as a Program Assistant/Specialized Subject Area with written verification of experience to serve in the instructional consulting capacity. This position is to be evaluated on a yearly basis and is dependent on specialized funding.
