COURSE INFORMATION Throughout this year we will learn how to recreate what we see... By looking for unusual perspectives we can make intriguing images. This was my summer with the family. Chicago, discovery museums, and beach days with my wife and son Logan. The "Bean" in Millenium park is a large convex reflective surface that is pretty incredible. Being a parent has allowed me to renew that sense of wonder one has when they are "seeing" the word through fresh eyes. I truly love my job and look forward to sharing my knowledge of art and giving all of you the opportunity to excell in drawing and painting. Use this web site for general info, project descriptions, timelines, and rubric breakdowns for our more complex projects.
Weekly Lesson Plans & Home Work Assignments
How to succeed in my art class... Each unit is designed to give you the tools needed to achieve the objectives for the project. Do the assignments and take care to ensure you understand what is being asked of you. I expect you to push yourself and to do your work with care and determination, but trust me, your skills will improve and you will like the results. Fail to complete assignments, neglect the directions, miss class a lot, and this class will be hard for you. Simply be open to what I am offering, work hard and this will be what you enjoy most about school!
Sketchbook assignments: Your homework in my class will be sketchbook assignments, writing assignments, idea development and finishing projects when you miss class or work slower than your peers. About your grade... Check your grade on PIV... Please go back to the Willow Glen homepage and follow the directions to use the parnet internet viewer (PIV). Beginning Projects For every project we do there will be several exercises that develop the needed skills. It is important to keep up with all of them. An athlete would not expect to perform at their highest level without learning form and technique. Likewise, I scaffold each project. Think of it like this: I will show you ways to observe, help you to gather your "bag of tricks". the project will be where you pull from your bag using the experience to creatively solve the problem the project asks you to solve.
"Breaking the Rules of Perspective" project: Read the rubric to see how to reach the highest grade possible. We have looked at how Escher either altered the rules or messed with your perception to create worlds on paper that cannot exist in reality. This is what you need to do to get started: 1. Choose your view from either normal (horizon in the middle of the page), or extreme with birds-eye (horizon on top of page) or worms-eye (horizon on bottom of page). 2. Pick your system either. 1 pt. or 2 pt. (pt.= point perspective) 3. Choose your inspiration from the tricks we learned: 2 box trick, waterfall, convex/concave, relativity, or multiple horizons. Also think if you want to use the stair flip trick (relativity). My advice is to follow the rules most of the time to establish a level of mastery for the knowledge and to make your image consistent, and then to break the rules somewhere that makes people take a double look. All of you have been asked to keep the notes for each trick and system together so that you can pull them out as you create your masterpiece. If you lost or misplaced any of your notes talk to one of your peers about geting tht info or come see me at lunch to fill in anything you need. Here are some examples of past project to give you ideas about what is possible. Remember after you draw out all your perspective you will need to shade the form to look 3D.

I often use powerpoints to show images and deliver assignments. Check the website often since I will post the powerpoint as a pdf file so you can view the lesson again from home or the computer lab.
