COURSE INFORMATION

COURSE CONTENT (brief outline of major units and approximate timeline by grading period):
Students in grade ten study major turning points that shaped the modern world, from the late 18th century though the present, including the cause and course of the two world wars. They trace the rise of democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical roots of current world experience that democratic ideals are often achieved at a high price, remain vulnerable, and are not practiced everywhere in the world. Students develop an understanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, geographic, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Students consider multiple accounts of events in order to understand international relations from a variety of perspectives. We will be using San Jose Unified’s Lifelong Learning Standards to frame the work that we will be doing this year.

SEMESTER 1:
Review of ancient history WEEKS 1-3
The rise of democratic ideas WEEKS 4-7
The Industrial Revolution WEEKS 8-10
The rise of imperialism and colonialism WEEKS 11-14
Causes and consequences of World War I WEEKS 15-18

SEMESTER 2:
Rise of totalitarianism and militarism ` WEEKS 1-4
Causes and consequences of World War II, WEEKS 5-9
The Cold War
Nation-building in the post-war period WEEKS 10-13
The interdependent global economy WEEKS 14-16
Contemporary global issues WEEKS 17-18

GRADING POLICY:
GRADING: Grades are based on a point system with the following scale:
90% = A
80% = B
70% = C
60% = D
Points will be earned by completing the various course requirements as they are assigned. Late assignments will only be accepted if the student has a late homework pass, and the assignment is turned in within one day of the due date. Occasional opportunities for extra credit may be offered throughout the course, provided you have no missing assignments.

HOMEWORK POLICY:
1. complete and turn in all homework and in-class assignments in a timely manner. (Approximately 30% of grade)

CLASSROOM RULES AND BEHAVIOR POLICY:
CLASSROOM CONDUCT: Students are expected to:
1. come to class prepared to learn.
2. respect fellow students, property, and the teacher.
3. participate. In order to ensure equal opportunity for all students to
participate, you will need to raise you hand and wait patiently until
acknowledged before asking questions or contributing to discussions.
4. make good use of classroom time. Class is only 56 minutes long; we will be
using all of that time.
