Community Service

Community Service is a graduation requirement. Students are required to perform in a minimum of 40 hours of community service to participate in graduation activities.

Community Service General Guidelines (from the Course catalog):

1. Students may choose to spend the block of time doing volunteer work for a community organization. Paid work will not be considered for community service hours.

2. Projects will be approved only for work through a non-profit community organization. They will not be approved for work with an individual, unless that individual is a client of a local agency.

3. All community service work will be completed outside of school hours.

4. The agency has the option of not signing the time sheet if the student’s job performance is not satisfactory.

5. Students must use official school community service timesheets and it must be signed by a parent or guardian. It is recommended that each student’s service project be described and approved on the community Service form prior to beginning any service to insure that the student’s hours will be accepted

6. Community Service performed for faith-based organizations will only be considered for the hours committed to providing a service to the community not for evangelical work.

7. Students will be given 20 hours of service time for being counselors at Science Camps.

8. Students will be given not more than 8 hours per day for summer camps.

9. Community Service hours will not be given for service performed for a parent or a relative.

10. Service hours completed during the school year for Science Camps will be limited to a total of 20 hours. [Includes service completed during winter and spring break].

11. Approved Community Service completed during weekends or vacation time will not exceed more than 8 hours a day.

12. Hours earned for after school or weekend training or planning sessions may count towards community service when the training results in actual volunteer service towards the community.

13. Paid work will not be considered for community service hours.

14. Service hours will not be given for any of high school club meetings.

15. Students entering San Jose Unified School District may have their Community Service Hours prorated depending on the grade level that they enrolled at. [Hours are prorated at ten hours per year.

16. The agency has the option of not signing the time sheet if the student's job performance is not satisfactory.

17. The Assistant Principal of Activities will verify, document, & record service hours & elective credits, if applicable.

18. Please Note: Schools may enforce their own guidelines as long as they are not contrary to the guidelines listed above and are approved by the District Service Learning Coordinator.
