Why is SJHA called a “Magnet School?”
“Magnet schools” are part of the California State public school system, but have something special to offer over other schools. SJHA’s specialty is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Whereas most students attend schools in the zones where they live, a student need not live near the Magnet school in order to attend. Because students from different areas can choose to attend a Magnet school, greater diversity in the student body may be attained.
|
How do Magnet Schools differ from other schools? |
Magnet schools are different from private or parochial schools in that Magnet schools are part of the public school system. A Magnet school operates under the public school administration, whereas a Charter School has a charter that releases it from the regular school administration. Private and parochial schools are not part of the public school system.
Are International Baccalaureate Programs offered at all high schools?
No, only a few high schools offer the IB Program. A school must apply to the International Baccalaureate Organization, follow stringent requirements for the development of its IB Program, and maintain these high standards to keep its designation.
What are the advantages of the IB Diploma Program?
See the detailed description of the IB Program and SJHA’s IB Program in the link to Academic Programs.
Is the IB Program more difficult than the regular high curriculum?
The IB Program is rigorous and challenging, and completion of the program requires a commitment on the student’s part to follow through with the requirements. The IB Program, however, need not be more difficult than non-IB studies for the student.

No. However, your student will need to supply a transcript from his/her previous school to show that the student is in good academic standing.
