Equity at San José Unified
San José Unified has a long history of serving communities with diverse backgrounds, experiences, skills, and need. The district has an established commitment to provide equitable opportunities for all of our students. In the 1990s, the district began implementing a number of reform initiatives, and under the leadership and innovation of Dr. Linda Murray, San José Unified experienced a period of incredible transformation.
We recognize that diversity varies widely across our 41 schools, and even within a single school community. The district has and continues to engage with well-respected public engagement organizations and educational leaders, and host focus groups with staff, students, and the community to collect data to help inform policies, strategies, and priorities. As a result, we have adopted an educational equity framework that allocates greater amounts of resources to schools with a higher percentage of students with high needs. This is the foundation for every decision we make as a district.
Our aim is to continue to evolve our practices and decisions to do right by our students and ensure our commitment to preparing today’s students to be the thinkers, leaders, and creators of tomorrow.
