Developer Fee

San José Unified collects development fees on new residential and commercial construction within the boundaries of the school district. These fees provide funds for the construction and reconstruction of school facilities and cannot be used for other purposes.

The current developer fees in San José Unified are:

Residential: $4.79 per square foot
Commercial/industrial: $0.78 per square foot
Mini Storage: $0.05 per square foot

Paying developer fees

Bring your completed School Fees Form along with payment to the San José Unified District Office. The form should be requested from the City of San José or County of Santa Clara when you submit your development project.

San José Unified is located at 855 Lenzen Avenue, San José, CA 95126. Our office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

San José Unified accepts check, cash, or bank draft for developer fees. We are unable to process credit card transactions.

The State Allocation Board adjusts developer fee rates in January of even-numbered years. Fees can only be increased when the school district’s Board of Education has completed and adopted a new justification study. San José Unified maintains an account for developer fees that is separate from other funds.

Fees for a residential project are assessed per square foot of accessible space. Fees for commercial/retail space are assessed per square foot of the entire project.

Developer fees are calculated based on information provided to San José Unified by the City of San José or County of Santa Clara on your School District Referral Form. If you disagree with the information on the School District Referral Form, please resolve the dispute with the City or County prior to coming to the San José Unified District Office to pay your fees.
