SJUSD’s Student Board Members: Empowering Voices, Shaping Futures

SJUSD Student Board Members

Like many public entities across the state, the San José Unified School District (SJUSD) is overseen by a dedicated group of professionals, advocates, and consultants, each deeply committed to their field. However, what sets the SJUSD Board of Education apart is the integration of youth voices. Alongside these seasoned policymakers, the board includes dynamic, insightful student representatives who bring forward the collective perspectives and concerns of the District’s student body. Student voices are not just heard—they’re integral to shaping the future of education. This year, the Board of Education integrated two remarkable young leaders, Lara Harb and Gabriel Ruiz Flores, who are making their mark with enthusiasm and commitment.

Lara Harb, a senior at Leland High School, embodies the spirit of active engagement and leadership. Her journey to the Board of Education began with a deep-seated interest in making a difference. “A couple of years ago, my teacher mentioned the student board position, and I was immediately intrigued,” Lara recalls. Her extensive involvement in school activities, from serving as the Associated Student Body (ASB) president to participating in track, soccer, and speech and debate, reflects her commitment to her peers and her school community.

As a student board member, Lara is most excited about representing the diverse voices of students across the district. “I’m looking forward to encouraging policies that positively impact students and collaborating with the trustees,” she says. Her role allows her to advocate for meaningful changes, driven by her experiences and the feedback she gathers from her fellow students.

Lara’s first day on the Board of Education was a whirlwind of new experiences. “Shadowing the previous student board member gave me a glimpse into the responsibilities I would soon undertake,” she shares. “It was exciting to think about contributing to discussions and decisions that affect our schools.”

Post-graduation, Lara plans to pursue a business career with a growing interest in policy-making. Her advice for future candidates? “Just go for it. Reflect on how you can help your school and student body, and use that understanding to drive your commitment.”

Gabriel Ruiz Flores, the alternate student board member and a senior at San José High, brings a unique perspective shaped by his extensive involvement in student leadership. Gabriel's dedication to student advocacy is evident from his role as ASB president to his role in the Intradistrict Leadership Committee (ILC). “I didn’t know much about the student board position before, but my activities director’s encouragement helped me see it as a valuable opportunity,” Gabriel explains.

For Gabriel, listening to and representing the voices of his peers is crucial. “I value hearing different perspectives and ensuring that student input translates into actionable changes,” he says. His experiences in ASB and tutoring reflect his belief in the power of community and collaboration.

Gabriel’s excitement for his role stems from his desire to improve student experiences across the district. “I’m looking forward to understanding diverse viewpoints and contributing to policy changes that benefit all students,” he notes. His ambition to study political science and pursue a career in law highlights his commitment to advocacy and education.

His first experience as a board member was both surprising and rewarding. “Getting the call while having dinner was a memorable moment,” Gabriel recalls. “The role has been an incredible opportunity to influence positive changes and work alongside dedicated individuals.”

Both Lara and Gabriel chair the Intradistrict Leadership Committee (ILC), an advisory committee comprising student representatives from San José Unifieds’s six comprehensive high schools. The ILC plays a critical role in discussing student-related issues and developing collaborative solutions. As the student board president, Lara will lead the ILC this year, setting goals and working with fellow representatives to address key student concerns.

The ILC meets monthly, rotating between school sites, and provides a platform for students to voice their opinions and work towards common objectives. Gabriel’s involvement in the ILC underscores his commitment to listening and responding to student needs, a practice he believes is essential for effective advocacy.

Lara and Gabriel started their term on the Board of Education on August 22 for the 2024-2025 school year, and their journey is just beginning. Students interested in joining the ILC or applying for the Student Board position for the next school year should contact their school’s activities director for more information.

As San José Unified continues to foster leadership and collaboration, Lara and Gabriel’s contributions will serve as a testament to the power of student voices in driving positive change.
