San José Unified’s Future Chefs Shine with Big Flavors and Bright Futures

San José Unified’s Future Chefs Shine with Big Flavors and Bright Futures

On March 10, 2026, the kitchen at Gunderson High School transformed into a stage of creativity, confidence, and culinary talent as San José Unified hosted its annual Future Chefs Challenge. The event brought together eight outstanding elementary students, all in grades 3–5, to showcase their original, globally inspired recipes in a live cooking competition that delighted judges, families, and staff alike.

Part of a nationwide program, the Future Chefs Challenge celebrates student innovation in the kitchen—encouraging young chefs to explore flavors, practice cooking skills, and think critically about nutrition and presentation. Each year, students submit recipes based on a unifying theme, with entries judged on taste, healthiness, kid-friendliness, originality, ease of preparation, presentation, and the student’s ability to share their culinary story.

Preparation for the competition begins months in advance. Starting in the fall, San José Unified’s Student Nutrition Services team partners with Sodexo to launch the annual challenge. By early winter, students across the district begin crafting and submitting their recipes—each one a reflection of personal inspiration, culture, and creativity. “What began as a new initiative has since become an annual tradition that students, families, and staff look forward to each year,” shared Jamie Karp, Director of Student Nutrition Services.

After weeks of anticipation, eight finalists were selected to move forward to the live event:

  • Caleb Figueroa (Grade 5, Anne Darling Elementary) — Pancakes De Elote
  • Rish Praveen (Grade 3, Booksin Elementary) — Smoked Tandoori Chicken Slider
  • Taylor Driessen (Grade 4, Booksin Elementary) — The Rainbow Road Trip: Fluffy Greek Flatbreads and Hidden-Veggie Dips
  • Israel Jaral Jr. (Grade 4, Grant Elementary) — Spicy Green Chicken Enchiladas
  • Lydia Logan (Grade 3, Hacienda Elementary) — Lemon Piccata Pasta
  • Sena Yalcin (Grade 5, Los Alamitos Elementary) — Creamy Béchamel Chicken Thigh
  • Connor Claussen (Grade 3, Reed Elementary) — Fish Tacos and Guacamole
  • Alon Ioffe (Grade 3, Williams Elementary) — Lemon Dijon Couscous

Each finalist brought bold flavors and global inspiration to the table, representing the diversity and creativity of San José Unified students.

On competition day, the finalists stepped into a high-energy environment, preparing their dishes live with the support of dedicated staff and volunteer sous-chefs. Each student was paired with a supportive adult—often from their own school—who provided guidance, encouragement, and a steady presence throughout the experience. “Collaboration between Student Nutrition staff, school teams, and Sodexo is central to the success of Future Chefs,” explained Daniella Sanchez, Consultant for Student Nutrition Services. “All teams work in sync to create a supportive, well-organized experience for students.”

Behind the scenes, months of planning came to life through the coordinated efforts of Student Nutrition Services, school teams, and Sodexo partners. From organizing equipment and ingredients to training volunteers and supporting students, the event is a true districtwide collaboration.

Staff also play a critical role in helping students feel confident throughout the experience. “Each finalist is paired with a sous-chef who provides both technical assistance and encouragement,” Sanchez added. “This consistent support allows students to focus, express themselves, and build confidence—not only in cooking, but in sharing their ideas with others.”

After an inspiring day of cooking and presentations, three students rose to the top:

🥇 Alon Ioffe (Williams Elementary) — Lemon Dijon Couscous
🥈 Rish Praveen (Booksin Elementary) — Chicken Tandoori Sliders
🥉 Connor Claussen (Reed Elementary) — Fish Tacos with Guacamole

Alon will go on to represent San José Unified at the regional level of the Future Chefs Challenge—an incredible achievement and a testament to the talent nurtured in our schools.

Since its launch in San José Unified around 2010, alongside Sodexo’s national program, the Future Chefs Challenge has grown into a beloved tradition. Beyond the excitement of competition, it provides students with opportunities to develop real-world skills—blending creativity with science, math, and critical thinking. “Programs like Future Chefs give students the opportunity to build confidence while developing practical, real-world skills,” Karp noted. “They encourage students to explore healthy choices and take ownership of their learning.”

As the final dishes were plated and applause filled the room at Gunderson High, one thing was clear: the future is bright—and delicious—in San José Unified. Congratulations to all eight finalists for their creativity, courage, and culinary excellence.
