Parents may request a language acquisition program at their school. If the parents and guardians of 30 or more students enrolled at the school or 20 or more students in the same grade level request a language acquisition program, San José Unified will be required to offer such a program to the extent possible, based upon the requirements of state law.

We encourage parents and guardians to actively participate in their child’s journey to reclassification as fluent English proficiency. Each school in San José Unified has a School English Learner Advisory Council (SELAC) that is responsible for developing the school’s plan for English Learners. SELAC representatives attend the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) to shape the overall plan for English Learners.
