Elementary Health Education

San José Unified provides access to a high-quality health course for 5th grade students using the program Puberty Talk by Health Connected as part of our commitment to exposing our students to resources that promote diversity and inclusivity. Parents may opt a student out for all or a portion of the five-day course, however students may not be opted out from only the gender identity portion.

Secondary Health Education

The California Healthy Young Act requires that all school districts provide comprehensive sexual health education and disease prevention education to students at least once in middle school and once in high school, beginning in grade 7. The Board of Education approved that this curriculum be delivered in grades 8 and 9.

The information provided will be medically accurate, age-appropriate, and inclusive of all students to encourage students to communicate with their parents, guardians, or other trusted adults about human sexuality and healthy relationships. San José Unified contracts with Health Connected to deliver this curriculum. Parents/guardians will be notified in writing before students are offered instruction in comprehensive sexual health education. Parents/guardians may submit a written request to the school principal if they do not want their student to participate in this instruction.
