Welcome to San José Unified School District!

San José Unified School District (SJUSD) has a centralized Enrollment Center, we offer Transitional Kinder (TK) through grade 12 at our schools. To enroll and attend SJUSD schools, the student(s) must be currently and continuously residing with a parent/guardian whose residence is located within the boundaries of the district. To determine if your residence is within the boundaries of SJUSD, visit the School Locator website.

New student enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year is ongoing throughout the school year. New student enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year begins on December 1, 2025, and continues throughout the school year.

Students enrolling for the 2026-2027 school year in Kindergarten must be five years old on or before September 1 of the academic year of enrollment.

Students enrolling for the 2026-2027 for TK must be four years old on or before September 1 of the academic year of enrollment.

Residents requesting Special Education services for their 3-year-old child or older may also register.

How to Enroll

What to Expect

Once an application is submitted, processing times may vary depending on the time of year.

Applications may take anywhere from a few days during low season (fall and spring) to several
weeks (winter and summer) to be reviewed and processed.

Enrollment is not complete until all requirements are met and a confirmation email is sent by a
member of the staff.

School assignment is based on the legal guardian’s residential address within a designated school
boundary, commonly referred to as the neighborhood school.

In some cases, even when all enrollment requirements are met, the neighborhood school may be
at capacity for the enrolling grade level. When this occurs, the student will be overloaded to the
nearest school with available space – excluding schools with magnet programs. The student
will also be placed on a waitlist to return to the neighborhood school should space become
available.

If the legal guardian wishes for the student to remain at the overloaded school, an Intradistrict
Transfer
must be submitted. Approval is contingent upon meeting specific eligibility criteria set
by the district.
