Elementary Enrollment Information

San José Unified School District (SJUSD) offers Transitional Kindergarten (TK) at all elementary schools except magnet schools: Hacienda Science/Environmental Magnet, Hammer Montessori at Galarza Elementary, and River Glen K-8.

Students who meet the age criteria can enroll in our TK program. Students who do not meet the criteria to enroll in TK may be eligible for several preschool programs offered by the Santa Clara County Office of Education. To learn more about the county’s programs, visit their website.

Transitional Kindergarten enrollment criteria

• 2024-2025 school year: children who are born between September 2, 2019 - June 2, 2020

• 2025-2026 school year: children who are born between September 2, 2020 - September 1, 2021

• 2026-2027 school year: children who are born between September 2, 2021 - September 1, 2022

Kindergarten enrollment criteria

• 2024-2025 school year: child was born between September 2, 2018 - September 1, 2019 

• 2025-2026 school year: child was born between September 2, 2019 - September 1, 2020

• 2026-2027 school year: child was born between September 2, 2020 - September 1, 2021

Students in grades TK-5 are assigned to their neighborhood school or at an overload school if space isn’t available at their neighborhood school at the time of enrollment. SJUSD offers several specialty programs for elementary students that may be requested during the enrollment process. Enrollment may be requested for our Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI), Science/Environmental, and/or the Montessori Program.

To request enrollment in a specialty program, you are required to attend a virtual orientation and complete the enrollment application online or in person. These programs are popular and typically have a waitlist. If your student does not get the requested school/program through the lottery, they will automatically be placed on the waitlist for the requested school/program. Any TWBI, magnet school, or intradistrict transfer requests will be processed according to district policies.

The deadline to participate in the lottery for the 2025-2026 school year is March 14, 2025. Students who submit enrollment applications after March 14, 2025, will be placed on the waitlist.
