San José Unified hires for a wide variety of job types and experience levels in non-teaching and teaching roles. Positions are categorized into three general classifications based on the nature and requirements of the role. For those seeking more flexibility, a substitute position may be more appropriate. Certificated – Certificated positions include teachers, school nurses, instructional coaches, and other positions that require a credential.
Classified – Classified positions are non-teaching roles that do not require a teaching or administrative credential. Examples include accountants, clerks, drivers, paraeducators, maintenance and service staff who support the district or school’s effort to ensure that every student who enrolls in our schools has access to the resources to learn and succeed.
Administrators – Administrator positions include Principals, Assistant Principals, Directors, Managers, and other District positions that require an Administrative credential.
Substitutes – Substitute openings include certificated and classified positions, with responsibilities and requirements varying by role. Substitutes support the needs of our students and help maintain safe and supportive environments. Substitute positions offer a unique and flexible opportunity for people to engage in work that supports students in the community.
