San José Unified hires for a wide variety of job types and experience levels in non-teaching and teaching roles. Positions are categorized into three general classifications based on the nature and requirements of the role.

Certificated – Certificated positions require a credential to provide academic instruction, social emotional guidance, and/or health services to students. Certificated positions include teachers and counselors (salary schedule B-1) as well as psychologists, speech and language pathologists, nurses, and a librarian (salary schedule B-2).
Classified – Classified positions support the district or school’s effort to ensure that every student can learn and succeed but do not require an education credential. Classified positions include a wide variety of accounting, clerical, specialized, and student support roles (CSEA salary schedules) as well as roles in grounds, maintenance, operations, student nutrition, technology, and transportation (AFSCME salary schedules).
Management – Management positions, which may be either certificated or classified, leadschools, district teams, and/or initiatives that support student learning. Management positions include Principals, Assistant Principals, Managers, Assistant Managers, and Directors.
Substitutes – Substitute positions may be either certificated or classified, with responsibilities and requirements varying by role. Substitute positions offer a unique and flexible opportunity for people to engage in work that supports students in the community.
