Transitional Kindergarten

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) allows 4-year old children to start school a year early to practice routines and social skills in a school setting and learn to work collaboratively with other students through dramatic play and small group instruction.  We offer TK at all of our elementary schools except Hacienda Science/Environmental Magnet, Hammer Montessori at Galarza Elementary, and River Glen K-8.

Our TK curriculum is designed to provide a social and academic foundation that is important for kindergarten readiness. TK teachers are fully credentialed in accordance with California credentialing requirements.

We offer a full day TK program that is free for students and open to all age-eligible children. Our TK classes provide support for children who are learning English and children with special needs. As the TK program expands, San José Unified will continue to add capacity for additional students each year until all 4-year old children are eligible at all elementary schools.

Parents may request enrollment in a Two Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI) or Academic Language Acquisition (ALA) program for their child for TK. We have limited capacity and may be unable to fulfill your request. Your child will still be eligible for the TWBI or ALA program for kindergarten if they did not enter the program in TK.

Children who complete TK will enter kindergarten in the next school year.
