Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a nondiscrimination statute that requires schools receiving federal funding provide a free appropriate public education to students with disabilities. A student eligible for services under Section 504 is one who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity, including learning; has a medical record of such an impairment; or is regarded by administrative and educational staff as having such a disability or impairment.
San José Unified is dedicated to ensuring that students eligible under Section 504 receive necessary services, accommodations, and supports at school. If you believe that your child would meet the criteria for Section 504, please contact your school site principal.
More information about the identification and education under Section 504 is available in Board Policy 6164.6 and Administrative Regulation 6164.6.
