Summer Learning

As we near the end of the school year, we are sharing information about two summer learning programs.

Expanded Learning Opportunity Program

The Expanded Learning Opportunity Program is an optional learning program established by the State of California to provide additional learning opportunities outside of the regular school day.  The program focuses on developing academic, social, emotional, and physical needs through hands-on, engaging learning experiences for students who meet the eligibility requirements. 

Student Eligibility for Summer 2024

Students in grades TK-6 who are identified by the State of California as one or more of the following:

  • English learners
  • Foster youth
  • McKinney Vento
  • Income eligible for free or reduced-price meals

Dates and Locations for Summer 2024

  • June 3, 2024 – June 28, 2024 (no program on June 19)
  • 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • 22 locations – location assigned based on your current school enrollment

Services

San José Unified is contracting with outside providers to staff the Expanded Learning Opportunity Program at all locations.  Each location will also have San José Unified staff to support students.

Students will receive two meals and one snack each day. 

Transportation is not provided for students attending the Expanded Learning Opportunity Program.

Registration

Students who meet the eligibility requirements will be invited to a specific location for the Summer 2024. Students who do not meet the eligibility requirements above will not be able to participate in the program.

Extended Summer Year

Extended Summer Year (ESY) is a program designed to provide continued educational support and services for students with individualized education programs (IEPs) who may benefit from additional instruction over the summer months. This program is mandated by federal law under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

The goal of ESY is to ensure that students with disabilities have the opportunity to maintain the skills they have acquired and continue their educational progress.

Dates and Locations for ESY 2024

  • June 3, 2024 – June 28, 2024 (no program on June 19)
  • Classes held Monday through Friday. Times based on location assignment: see bell schedule
  • 12 locations – see ParentSquare communication for location assignment

Students will receive two meals and one snack each day. 

Transportation is not provided unless stated in the student’s IEP. Students who are also participating in the Expanded Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP) are responsible for their transportation.
