Last week, California extended the deadline for grade change requests to pass/no pass for the 2020-2021 school year.  San José Unified will accept requests from parents or guardians of high school students to change one or more letter grades earned in the 2020-2021 school year to a pass/no pass grade through Sunday, October 10, 2021.

We want to provide the information you need to help you determine if this option is best for your student.

College Admissions: Several colleges in California, including California State schools and University of California schools, will accept transcripts with a pass/no pass grade instead of a letter grade.  The list of schools accepting pass/no pass grades can be found online.

Many colleges, including those in other states, may not accept a pass/no pass grade instead of a letter grade for admission purposes.  Please carefully consider the policies of the colleges to which your student may apply before requesting a change to a pass/no pass grade.

Grade Point Average and Transcripts: Courses with a pass/no pass grade are not used in the grade point average calculation.  The following general guidelines can be used to determine whether a change to a pass/no pass may benefit your student:

  • A change from an F to no pass will benefit a student’s overall transcript
  • A change from a D to pass will benefit a student’s overall transcript
  • Other changes are unlikely to benefit a student’s overall transcript

Before requesting a change to your student’s grades, we highly recommend you contact the school’s counselor or principal to discuss your student’s specific circumstances.

Request Process:  You may request a change to one or more letter grades for the 2020-2021 school year by completing the online grade change request.  Your student’s transcript will be updated within 15 calendar days of your request.  We will notify parents and guardians and the student once the transcript change is complete.  All grade change requests must be made by Sunday, October 10, 2021.

If you have questions about this process or want to discuss your student’s situation, please contact your counselor or school principal.
