San José Unified fills board vacancy with provisional appointment
SAN JOSÉ, CA – On Tuesday, March 13th, the San José Unified School District Board of Education voted to appoint data scientist Michael Melillo to fill a vacancy from Board Trustee Area 4, which became vacant on February 12, 2018, with the resignation of Paymon Zarghami. Mr. Melillo will take the oath of office at the next regular board meeting on Thursday, March 15th, and will serve until the term of office expires in December 2018. Seven candidates submitted applications and were interviewed by the Board in advance of the appointment.
In addition to nearly two decades of professional experience in the technology sector, Mr. Melillo currently serves as Vice Chair of the City of San José Library and Early Education Commission and volunteers as an adult literacy tutor with the San José Public Library. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Political Science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Masters of Business Administration from San José State.

Mr. Melillo lives in Trustee Area 4 with his wife and two children, both of whom attend elementary school in San José Unified.
The Board of Education provides leadership and oversight of San José Unified schools and works with the Superintendent to set a direction for the district, establish policies, and ensure accountability. Board meetings are generally held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of every month at the San José Unified District Office, 855 Lenzen Ave., San José, CA 95126. Meetings begin at 6:00 p.m., except as noted or when a closed session is scheduled.
