San José Unified students cook up healthy comfort food recipes in 2017 Future Chefs competition

WHAT: While healthy eating can be a challenge for kids and parents, elementary school students in San José Unified School District (SJUSD) will use their creativity and culinary skills to make healthy comfort food recipes in the 2017 Future Chefs Challenge, sponsored by Sodexo. The national initiative, now in its seventh year, was created to get students thinking about making healthy food choices while also encouraging them to be active and creative in the kitchen. SJUSD students are joining over 2,600 other students representing more than 1,300 school sites across 256 districts in 30 states.

150 elementary school students submitted healthy comfort food recipes, and ten were selected to participate in the district-wide finals event. Finalists will prepare and present their creations, which will be judged on originality, taste, ease of presentation, kid friendliness, and use of healthy ingredients. The winning student will be considered for a regional finalist award. Selected regional finalists will vie to become one of five national finalists competing for the public’s vote on SodexoUSA.com.
