New Year Recess Continues and Preparing for Return to School

December 27, 2021

We hope you have enjoyed the first week of the New Year Recess and that 2022 gets off to a safe start for you and your family.

We look forward to welcoming our students and staff back to school on January 4, 2022 and have a few reminders to ensure the transition back to school is as smooth as possible.

Traveling and COVID-19 Testing Recommendation
The State of California currently recommends that all travelers arriving in or returning to California from other states or countries should follow CDC travel guidance as well as get tested 3-5 days after arrival.  In addition, anyone with COVID-19 symptoms should get tested immediately and follow public health recommendations.

Students and staff can receive a RT-PCR COVID-19 test at no cost through San José Unified.  Tests can be scheduled at go.sjusd.org/COVIDtest.  Testing is available as follows:

  • December 28 and 29, 2021 at the Operations Warehouse from 8:10 AM to 4:40 PM
  • January 3, 2022 at the District Office, Liberty (Erikson), and the Operations Warehouse from 8:10 AM to 4:40 PM
  • Each school day at all three locations

Santa Clara County also offers free COVID-19 tests at multiple locations throughout the county.

Governor Newsom recently announced that the state would be providing at-home test kits for every public school student as kids head back to school.  These rapid tests would not be required and do not change San José Unified’s current testing system.  The state has not shared delivery information with school districts at this time.  We are planning for how best to distribute these rapid tests to our 27,000 students and will communicate additional information as soon as we receive the tests from the state.

COVID-19 Safety Protocol
San José Unified’s COVID-19 safety measures have worked because we have worked together to follow them.  We have stopped the transmission of COVID-19 in our schools and helped slow the spread in our community.  We want to continue to keep our schools as safe as possible and encourage you to remind students about the keys to our safety protocol:

  • Masks are always required, unless eating or drinking or engaged in heavy physical exertion under the direction of a teacher or staff member
  • Students and staff are required to self-administer the COVID-19 health screen every day before coming to school
  • Wash hands or use hand sanitizer frequently throughout the day

If you or someone you know is among the 14% of eligible Santa Clara County residents yet to be vaccinated, the time is now for the benefits of getting a COVID-19 vaccine.  In addition to the 86% that are already vaccinated, more than half of eligible Santa Clara County residents have received their booster.  The COVID-19 booster is recommended for all students and staff ages 16 and older.  To get vaccinated or boosted now, visit sccfreevax.org.

Happy New Year!
Our offices will be open on Monday, January 3, 2022.  We look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.
