Parcel Tax
Measure Y was approved by more than 67% of voters in the General Election of November 8, 2016. It assesses a $72 per parcel annual tax on properties within San José Unified School District, beginning in 2017-18 and effective through 2024-25 (8 years).
The parcel tax is projected to raise $5 million in annual local funding to support San José Unified’s efforts to:
- Maintain and improve core academic programming in reading, writing, math, the arts and science;
- Improve programs to prepare students for college and 21st century careers; and
- Attract and retain high performing teachers and educational staff.

Applying for an Exemption
- Who can apply? Exemptions from paying the Measure Y Parcel Tax are available to property owners who are 65 years of age or older by June 30th of the current year, OR who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), and will only apply to their primary place of residence. Exemptions will not be approved for multiple properties.
- When can I apply? Applications are accepted on a rolling basis year-round. We will process applications and required documents by mail, email or in person until June 30th of the current year. Once approved, exemptions will be applied beginning of the next tax year and will carry over until the parcel tax expires in 2024-25. You will not need to re-apply once your exemption has been approved. The County Tax Collector requires that we report new exemptions in July of each tax year.
- How can I apply? Download the application that applies to you and mail or email the completed form with required documentation to: San José Unified School District, Attn: Internal Audit (Measure Y), 855 Lenzen Ave., San José, CA 95126, or send via email to: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Please note:
- If your request is approved, you will not need to renew the exemption; it will automatically be renewed until the parcel tax expires in 2024-25. However, if you sell your home and purchase a new home in San José Unified, you will need to file for an exemption for the new property.
- Property owners must be 65 years of age to be eligible for this exemption in the next available tax year.
- This parcel tax applies to parcels with land value. If your parcel is taxed for improvement value only (as in some mobile home parks), the parcel tax will not be assessed on your parcel, and you do not need to complete an exemption application.
Oversight Committee
The Measure Y Parcel Tax Oversight Committee (PTOC) will typically meet 2-4 times per year to review the district’s use of revenue from the 2016 Measure Y parcel tax and ensure that the intent of the voters who approved the measures is being met.
PTOC members must live or work within the borders of San José Unified and must not be a San José Unified employee or contractor. SJUSD encourages representation from those with a child currently enrolled in the district, or represent a local taxpayer organization, business association, or neighborhood group. San José Unified employees and contractors are not eligible to apply.
